SBAM - Sustainable Building Assessment Method

The Sustainable Building Assessment Methodology (SBAM) - formerly SBET - is a quick and practical method for enhancing sustainable development. This includes assessment of building practices and selection of sustainable technologies and materials.

SBAM is based on a participatory workshop approach taking into account not only environmental, economic, but also social and institutional aspects of sustainable development. Stakeholders establish quantitative and qualitative indicator sets,  assess, and develop solutions.

SBAM provides decision-makers and programme managers with reliable information about the sustainability of their activities. This has gained great relevance in particular in post-disaster reconstruction activities (Tsunami projects).

SBAM was designed by SKAT and Development Alternatives (India) between 2001 and 2005 through a series of workshops, held in India, Cuba and South Africa. Desk research and field-testing was conducted by a network of practitioners and led to the development of an effective methodology. The product now includes an internet-based software application (www.sbet.ch), which has been developed together with Neeti Solutions (India).

Support received by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has played a crucial role in providing continuity to the SBAM initiative.
The basin South Asia platform, currently managed by Development Alternatives, facilitated the initiative in India.
