Development and Implementation of Tsunami Reconstruction and Development Programmes in Sri Lanka

The Tsunami disaster of 26 December 2004 affected most severely the coastal areas of Sri Lanka, the Indonesian province of Aceh, Southern India, the Maldives, Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar with a death toll reportedly exceeding 250'000, with millions of people who became homeless.

Helvetas and the Swiss Red Cross with the support of Swiss Solidarity are  implementing several reconstruction and development projects in the affected regions with the aim to provide an appropriate response to the reconstruction and rehabilitation needs for public and private infrastructure.

Panichankerni

The „Panichankerni Reconstruction Scheme“ centres on the construction of 130 houses including basic infrastructure and community facilities in the fisher village of Panichankerni in the Vaharai area on the East Coast of Sri Lanka. The village is situated 60 km north of Batticaloa town at the border of the LTTE and government controlled area.
